Midtown Millennials and UBER - Run away little newbie.....

I love Midtown Millennials. They are so sweet and polite. They all tip, say please, and thank you. They never drink or do drugs. They never touch your radio dials or go through your stuff looking for aux cords. They never ever unplug your phone to charge their own. They don't use profanity. And they politely hold their puke until they get home.

~ Said No Uber Driver Ever

What is a Midtown Millenial?

From Wikipedia - "Millennials (also known as Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X (Me! - Whoo Hoo!).  There are no precise dates for when this cohort starts or ends; demographers and researchers typically use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years."  By day they appear as innocent looking young professionals.  Most of them are.  All across the US, in fact.  However, there is an area of Houston where the air contaminates these young minds..... Causing them to turn into sex-crazed alcoholics when the sun goes down.

Where is Midtown Located?

Midtown is located in the center part of Houston, just south of Down-Town.  Usually known to be safe by day with nice restaurants in the area.  But when Friday and Saturday nights hit, the entire area converts into a crazed mad house.

The Bane of all Houston Uber Drivers

Midtown Millennials (MM's) have since the dawn of Uber in Houston (circa 2014) are the worst of the worst, the lowest of the low, the greatest bane of all Uber drivers in the area.  This population is widely known for their strong sense of self entitlement.  They are rude and talk down to us.  They cause damage to our vehicles.  Always trying to sneak in open containers of alcohol.  They demand water, aux cords, our chargers.  They adjust our heating/cooling, radio, blue tooth, volume, you name it.  They will also help themselves to our phone chargers, by disconnecting our phones.  They also love to keep us waiting,  jam pack 5-8 people into an UberX car, and leave their vomit behind for us to clean up.  Sometimes they cuss us out, sexually harass us, or use racial slurs.  What a great representation of the future of America.

Many a time, Midtown Millennials will drink themselves insanely drunk.  They also love to do drugs.  There is no boundary that they will not cross.  The two most dangerous places to pick up Midtown Millennials  are the nightclubs Clé and Spire.  Reason being?  Well, they are known for the large amount of cocaine traffic.  When a Midtown Millennial is under the influence (you never know), you are at the highest risk of incurring damage and severely abusive behavior from these paxs.

What Uber Drivers Are Saying
(unedited from the Face Book Groups)

"Yes I have a tip sign. It works with ou alumni but does not work with rude Millennials Lol got one serge this morning as I was leaving house was online from 945 am till now $56 one tip $5 uber says I was online 3 hr 16 min but I compute 5. hrs with one pause to get gas"

"A millenial gave me a bad rating for not having an iPhone charger. She asked and I said no and she said I thought it was required for Uber drivers to have iPhone chargers. I responded with a laugh and said who told you that lie. Lol. My rating dropped a point."

"Next time a drunk millennial pax from Midtown demands to use my aux cord or pair their phone to my Bluetooth, I'm totally going to blast "Barney and Friends" - music to match their immaturity levels of dumb little shits"

"I love Houston, but since when did this town become so self centered and so rude? nobody tips, nobody comments and nobody leaves remarks on uber. Oh, but one lil mistake, or one wrong turn, and mother fuckers are quick to leave negative remarks and cry to uber about you. I'm sick and tired of this shit

You are describing entitled Millennials.  This is exactly how they act.  To quote ########, Welcome to the jungle my friend."

"Actually took a nap when I got there, scored a nap for an hour then a nice ride to Woodlands resulting in a $20 tip. Now heading back after dinner. Why do suburban folks tip, and those urban millennials won't?

...because yuppie millenials be broke and probably still living with the parents to afford the college loans they need to pay on."

"Picked up my first prostitute pax this morning! Wow.....complaining little wench! "Take me to bank of America, he didn't pay me enough, I'm not his girlfriend" OMG!

My sentiments after I drop a millennial in Midtown..."

"Effective tonight, I will no longer pick up drunk couples (All they do is argue) and dJust picked up two girls in Midtown. About halfway through the drive the girl behind the driver seat started breathing very heavily through her nose. I asked her if she was okay and she said "mmhhmm". I thought she was about to puke but it never happened. Then she gets out of my car and I turn and look at her as she was leaving and her cheeks are puffed out and really full. This girl threw up in her mouth and held it there for at least three full minutes before crossing the street, going up the driveway and letting it fly in the grass. I have never seen that in my entire life and it turned my stomach. Held it in her mouth "shudder""

"I honestly hate Midtown now. self entitled Millennial brats thinking they can just walk right in front of you across the street"

"Uber driver convention here at the Capital One lot in midtown. Almost two dozen of us here now. Sharing the misery of low earnings so far and hoping for a big surge after midnight."

"Isn't it bad enough that we have demanding self centeredMillenials misbehaving in our cars? Older folks were raised right, so demanding behavior as described is less explicable and equally unacceptable."

"Online 3.5, 8 trips for about $57. Slow compared to last Saturday. Played baseball with my son for almost 2 hours so started later and tired. Starting to get all drunk millennials, so i'm out."

"I'm NW. My stepdaughter works in those areas and it is obviously a common mindset among those young, uber-indoctrinated,millennials. Even seeing what effects the cheapskate attitudes have on us as drivers, she and her friends/acquaintances refuse to tip drivers because "they're getting paid for it" and "well, uber says tipping is not allowed" (allowed, or required, needed...depending on who you argue with). Can't get it thru her head, even though she depends on tips herself...they think we make $30/hr because that's what all the driver recruitment ads say."

"I was tempted to be an all nighter but last night I could've been killed. Picked up an XL group oh my way home full of millennials. On our way to the strip club at 345am they offered me 500.00 to drive them to the Golden Nugget. I said -cash up front. Then they decided they needed energy to last thru Saturday and called their dealer for some coke. I said hmmm NO. Never mind. Go to the strop club or I'll take you a just home. Thankfully they were cooperative and I called it a night."

"Last night from thay concert at 8x were guys in there 30s- early 40s . The few millenials I saw were sprawled out in the grass looking like they were not in a rush to get anywhere."

"Right now the drunks and sluts are doing their "walk of shame" trying to find the vehicles they left near the clubs. So head to where the youngmillennial yuppies reside in those big apartment complexes around town. Don't expect a tip or a thanks btw..."

"I was in Midtown and Pax called and asked me, "where are you?". I said, "I'm in front of Subway". Pax said, "we don't have a subway in Houston!"

"Heres a new one. A guy gets out the vehicle after a pretty good ride and convo and says "im a mellinial i never carry cash but you can hit my vape pen if you want" and thats the ignorance that annoys me and lowers his rating"

"Avoid Washington Ave and midtown between 12pm-2 am unless you like impatient assholes and puke lol"

"Thursday night had a Millennial complaint about the music, the charging cord so I kept calm , then I stopped at a red light and he wanted me to run the light , then he snapped his fingers to go when it turned green , I lost it and told him and his friends to get out , he started yelling , and moving his hands that's when I noticed he had an open container and I didn't know , he keeps cursing me out and his girlfriend tells him to just let it go, he then tells me to go work at Home Depot and calls me a Beaner I almost lost it but I kept calm and just drove off, I love Midtown"

What can you do?

If you find yourself with a drop off in Midtown, turn off your app immediately.  Do not do pick ups in Midtown.  That's a sure way to avoid the "Midtown Monsters''.

Don't keep aux cords in your car.  Hide your chargers.

Keep doors locked to verify correct number of pax and no open containers.

Always keep a fully charged taser and fresh can of mace.

NEVER EVER do a 2 a.m. Midtown pickup under 4.0 surge.

If they have drugs on them, drive them to the nearest 24 hours police sub station.  They need help!  You're doing them a favor.

A Few Fun Facts about Midtown Millennials

They are addicted to Snapchat, Bumble, Tinder.

They never do anything without their phones.

When they do grow up, they migrate to the Heights, get married, where they are at risk of  reproducing.

No one knows what happens to Midtown Millennials once they get over the age of 35.  See the two scenarios below.  No live sightings after this point have ever been confirmed.

We Ain't The Babysitters' Club

With the ease and convenience of using Uber and Lyft, people will often times order an Uber for someone else, whether they are their significant other, co-worker, relative, and in some cases minors riding unaccompanied.  According to the TOS, Uber does not allow minors to ride unaccompanied by an adult on their platform for obvious reasons.  Yet, parents, rather than being bothered by having to run their kids to school when they miss the school bus, or the need to shuffle them to an activity, tend to turn to using their Uber app to order up a car to take their kids on.  When the driver pulls up, they are either faced with young kiddos sans parents, or kiddos with parents, where the parents have the gall to let the driver know that they will be transporting their kids.......ALONE.  Stop the press.  This isn't what we signed up for.  If you have kids, they are your responsibility.  Not ours to drive from point A to point B.  Unfortunately some parents never get it through their heads.

Yesterday, after dropping off passengers to Hobby airport I got a trip request.  When I drove up, the passengers were two 15-year-old boys.  Their dad had ordered the Uber.  The address 8501 Howard was to Ceasar Chavez Highschool.  When I realized no parent was joining us and it was kids only, I cancelled the trip and asked them out of the car.  I also rated the account holder a 1 Star and wrote in to Uber.  Guess who lost their rider account?  This is a common annoyance among Uber drivers of Houston with 107 high schools in Harris county (35 in Houston ISD) spread among 21 school districts.  But us drivers have caught on.  Now-a-days when we see a pick up from a high school, we don't bother accepting or we cancel the trip.

However, there is one problem area in all of Houston, which is the Memorial Villages.  Very affluent parents whose children hold bank accounts and credit cards of their own can open up their own Uber accounts.

Minors aren't supposed to be able to ride in Ubers unaccompanied, but they can still create an Uber account.  This is where Uber needs to step in.  As drivers we have to give our date of birth on our driver licenses to create a driver account.  The same thing should go with passenger accounts as well.   We're kinda tired of driving to a pickup to realize we wasted gas and time for a trip we couldn't accept.  Give us a damn break already.

As for you drivers out there, that have no problem transporting unaccompanied minors, you are putting your self through unnecessary risk.  Stop enabling these lazy parents.  We are here to make a living or get our side hustle on.  We're not babysitters.  After all, they make more money than us.

Houston Airports TNC Under Siege - Part Three (Rides to Die For)

Hello again readers.  Today's final installment of this 3-Part series dives into the topic of vehicle quality and safety.  Recently, Uber has announced that they now accept vehicles that are 2002 or newer for X and XL as the minimum requirements.  Mind you, Select is 2008 or newer, SUV/Black are 2011 or newer.  They sent us all notices in our app as well as posted online.

So with the combination of the bill signed by Governor Abbott removing all City regulations and Uber now accepting much older vehicles, all standards have pretty much gone out the window.  It's bad enough that due to low low rates, a significant population of drivers are driving on worn tires with little tread.  Cracked windshields don't get repaired.  Cars are now showing up to pick up airport passengers (and other in-town as well) with body damage including crappy shop jobs, dents, duct taped bumpers, busted headlights, and who knows what else.  Passengers have started reporting on problems with vehicle quality and safety.

Below are pictures that have been taken by fellow drivers of what you can expect from a growing population of POS Ubers on the road.  Surely Uber would have your safety in mind?  Well.....maybe..... maybe not!

The last picture was posted by the driver himself, complaining about getting a flat at the Bush TNC lot.  But it was already waaayyyyyyy past the point of needing to be replaced due to the tread being worn to hell.  I think a face palm is in order here.😆😆😆😆😆😆

Comments from other drivers in the Uber Facebook Groups

"A few weeks ago my neighbor requested Uber guy arrived car was in accident never fixed and car was in bad shape I told her to email uber and not get in the car... she took a picture and reported the guy.. uber has gone down hill big time they need to leave Houston"

"Passengers in Austin have noticed and don't like it. They are ordering more select and XL just because of that they said or taking Lyft because they have better cars lmao all weekend Lyft RideAustin and Fasten surged but nothing on Uber! It was almost like Austin was saying F*ck Uber lol"

"I have a relative with a DWI that is allowed to drive for Uber, but NOT Lyft.. something to consider when choosing a ride."

"I have seen so many bald tires at the airport lot, its unreal"

"Really? Picking up pax from the airport when you're on a donut tire? WTF is wrong with you? There's 2 of you idiots in the Bush TNC lot. That is fucking dangerous."

Another driver posting after a driver posted they've been hit by another car - "If your car still works, fuck it. I got hit superbowl night and had a large dent and paint chip on my front bumper... still worked. Needed money!!"

"I'm an Uber Black, I hate to say this but thanks to all of the bad shit going on with the I responsible Uber/Lyft driver I'm getting more ride request. Uber black is still regulated by the city because of the Limo licensing which Uber Black must have, to all the shitie UberX, UberXL, dirty cars thank you keep up the good work as I will get more requests. With all this said there are also bad Uber blacks car, I will will say "get your shit together asshole, you are making us look bad" thank you all."

What can you do?

1)  Don't get in the car.  Cancel the trip.  If you're in the car, get out and report to Uber on your app right away.  There is a chance that Uber may deactivate the driver's account, thus you save a life.
2)  Go online and ask for a refund.  Explain about the state of the vehicle.  Here's the link.  https://help.uber.com/h/ce11768c-c469-4a75-bb02-abc55ad15fa2
3)  While you're at it, request that the driver be permanently deactivated.  Why not?  If they can't take care of their ride, what makes you think they know how to drive?  Drivers like me, who take care of our cars can do with less competition anyways and we'll thank you for it!
4)  Rate the app on Google Play.  Tell them what kind of car came to pick you up.  Uber needs to know that this shit like this doesn't fly with the passenger population.

Remember readers..... times are tough.  You can't rely on anyone else but YOU to keep you and your family safe on the roads of Houston.   You don't want to end up in a body bag due to the gross negligence of drivers that probably should have never been allowed on the Uber platform in the first place.

Houston Airports TNC Under Siege – Part Two (TNC Lots from Hell)

Hello Everyone.  Today is Part Duece of what goes down at the Bush and Hobby TNC lots.  For those of you that are not drivers and unfamiliar with our jargon, the Houston Airport System (HAS) has designated waiting lots for Uber drivers at IAH (Bush) and HOU (Hobby) Airports.  TNC comes from the term “Transportation Network Compliance” which used to be when drivers were regulated by the City of Houston.  Hence the name “TNC Lots”.

The Good Ole Days

Once upon a time (circa 2014), the TNC lots used to be a nice friendly place for drivers to hang out while waiting on an airport fare.  People could meet up with other drivers that they’ve become familiar with from the Houston Uber Facebook Groups.  Friendships were made.  Lunches were shared.  Drivers got some occasional nap time in.  Some read books.  Some brought their computers.  People cleaned their cars.  Some were students and did homework.  Some drivers even brought their prayer rugs.  Someone occasionally came by to sell snacks and beverages.  It was basically, a simple casual meet up place while waiting for a trip.  The lots had no marked parking areas or much signage.  The only complaints were the garbage not getting collected or the porta-potties cleaned on a regular basis.   The queues went fairly quickly.

Hell on Earth

Fast forward to 2016.  With more and more drivers onboarding, the number of drivers grew to over 10,000 in Houston alone, the TNC lots began to get packed like sardines.  Waiting for an airport trip took much longer.  This is also attributed to Uber significantly dropping rates to such low levels, the drivers’ preference for airport fares grew astronomically.  Drivers started forming gangs to claim territory and rule over the lots, thus harassing other drivers and making many uncomfortable.  Fake GPS apps came into play more and more.  Cell phone jamming occurred on occasion (until recently where it got much worse).  Garbage littered the lots.  Urine smells from drivers whipping it out and pissing outside by their cars.  Fights breaking out.  Occasional fender benders.  People parked anywhere and everywhere blocking others in.   It became a zoo.  Not to mention a number of drivers started displaying very poor hygiene.

Actual Footage taken at IAH TNC lot in September of 2017

HAS responded at the IAH & HOU TNC Lots by putting up fencing, installing signage, putting up metal posts, painting in the parking spots, and creating entrance and exit lanes.  On the plus side they installed more porta potties, started to regularly clean them and empty trash, as well as installing non-potable water stations with soap, water, and paper towels.  Things got a little better until the TX bill that was signed by Govenor Abbott in May 29, 2017, thus abolishing the City of Houston TNC laws.  Drivers now can drive anywhere and did not have to submit to a strict background, health, or vehicle safety checks.  The Houston driver population quickly skyrocketed to over 65,000 on boarded drivers.

However, with some of these changes at the airports, things still continued to go to shit when the lowest of drivers started using the non-potable water stations as their personal bathing station.   I’m really not shitting you, though I wish I was.  There are actually drivers with really bad hygiene.  I don’t know how passengers stand it.

"Yo...you in the mini van.  WTF happened to you?"
Friday Night Lights

Actual (Unedited) Comments from drivers in the Houston Uber Facebook Groups

“Im keeping my head out of it. It's really disgusting some of the things I see in the tnc lot and I stopped going because I am not profiting. Just be careful, this is the kind of stuff that leads to body bags and law suits. But what do I know.”

“I drop off and then I drive through to get in the queue. Then I go to the convenience store, McDonald's, Jack in the box or go get gas. Then I drive through the geofence area again to stay in the queue. Sometimes I get a ride, if it's short I drive back to keep myself in the queue. If it's long then so be it. If I'm still around by the time I'm down to about 21-30 then I go to the lot. One time out riding around I did a pickup to take someone to Hobby from Humble. I spend as little time in the TNC lot as possible.”

“After being physically hit (on my leg) by another car at the Bush TNC lot I decided to make fewer trips there. They are a bunch of con men getting rich off shenanigans while we get the short trips. Not to mention the rudeness towards women.”

“A lot of folks are using Fake GPS programs to place themselves in queue and stay at home until it's almost time for their ride or use another ride share app to take other rides.”

“Is it just me or is the queue jacked up....I pull into the lot and my app says 31-40 and there are at least 100 cars in the lot. Happening a lot lately”

“I had a guy come and hit the top of my car because I slide in a parking spot before he did. I politely informed him the next thing he'll be hitting is the cement if he does that again.”

“about a year ago I had the unpleasant honor to see a guy jacking it as I walked by to the crappy porto potty smh”

“You know the group of men that hang out right as you drive in the lot....check the next time you go in and see if there are any there with multiple phone”

“My car has been keyed”

“So I don't have a story about what you asked about and I try to avoid bush as much as I can, but I do need to nag about a group of individuals who I always see the times I've been there. They all hang out by the fence and act like they run the show there . Dictating who and who cannot park against their little hang out wall. One time one of them literally stood behind an older man's van, started pounding at the back and when the man went back to ask wth was going on, this dude was about to kick his behind was it not because his friends stop him.”

“Was hearing today that there are a couple who frequent the IAH TNC staging area who walk around and use cell phone jammers....then my phone coincidentally lost all signal for about 10 minutes. Now that is dirty. I'm legitimately not upset I lost my place in que because I didn't want to be out there today anyways. Gave me a reason to say fuck it and come back home.”

So there you have it.  TNC Lots are definitely no joy.  It's only a matter of time before they bring in drug dealing and prostitution.

On a side note..... I just celebrated my One Year Anniversary at my full time job.  The cupcakes were delish!   Tune in for tomorrow's final part to the TNC Conundrums.....Part Three - (It's a surprise!)

Houston Airports TNC Under Siege - Part One (Cell Phone Jammers)

Houston Uber drivers have been noticing significantly higher wait times with a significantly lower airport queue count.  Then just as their number is getting called for that much expected airport trip, they find they've been kicked out of queue or even worse.... the ping stops in mid call!

Typically as an Uber driver is dropping off a passenger to the airport, they will check to see how many cars are in queue.  You know...... to see if it would be worth sticking around before going about their merry way in the search of the next pax.  They see a low queue count and think, "Cool!  I will get a trip out in no time!"  WRONG!

WARNING!  WARNING!  JAMMING DEVICES IN USE!

The reason why the queue looks so low when its really not is drivers are systematically being kicked off-line without warning.  When you come in at 21-30 cars, you expect to be out of there in 30 minutes tops.  Instead, you're going to be there well over 2 hours.  We used to be able to gauge the wait time.  For example 161-170 meant a 2 1/2 hour wait;  81-90 could mean 1 to 1 1/2 hour wait;  21-30 meant 20-30 minute wait.  So everyone has the same queue number (like 50-60 drivers thinking they're in the 21-30 count queue).  So be warned.  The queue numbers are total bull shit.  Don't fall for it!

What exactly is a cell phone jamming device?

These are pretty basic devices.  The simplest have an on/off switch. Every jamming device has to have an antenna to send out the signal.  On stronger devices, antennas are external to provide long range and be tuned for individual frequency.  Jamming devices typically have a reach of 30-75 feet.

One time, I was pissed at waiting forever in the 1-10 count at Hobby and decided to leave and try my luck elsewhere.  As soon as I drive out of the lot, I got a ping.  This has also happened to me at other random times.  I'm like... what the fuck?

A cell phone jamming device is a device used to overpower the cell phone by transmitting a signal on the same frequency and at a high enough power that the two signals collide, thus cancel each other out. Cell phones are designed to add power if they experience low-level interference, so the jammer must recognize and match the power increase from the phone.  In other words.....You lose your place in queue, but put back in the same wait as this is systematically occurring to all the cell phones in your area.  You think you can depend on your wi-fy or cell phone data.  Think again.  They can jam those signals as well.

"Who is doing this?" you ask.  Well the Uber drivers known as "The Airport Mafia".  These guys are typically seen trying to do traffic control, setting up shop in certain areas where other drivers are not allowed, parking in the middle of right of way passages and parking where ever the hell they want without regards to other drivers.  They use group bullying intimidation practices. Sometimes they are walking around (probably with cell phone jammers in hand).  There are several Airport Mafias.  Below is one group where I got pictures from two different Uber driver sources.  These fuck-wads are some of the known offenders.

Nigerian Mafia Headquarters

What can you do?

1) First be weary of abnormally low queue numbers.  You know jammers are present.
2) Know that Federal law prohibits the operation, marketing, or sale of any type of jamming device.  Contact the FCC at https://www.fcc.gov/general/jammer-enforcement.
3)  Contact your cell phone provider to alert them.  Jamming is seen as property theft, because a private company has purchased the rights to the radio spectrum, and jamming the spectrum is akin to stealing the property the company has purchased. It also represents a safety hazard because jamming blocks all calls including 911.  Cell phone providers can pull the data to pin point the location of where the signal jamming is occurring.
4)  The Uber queue gives you a generous amount of distance to park and drive around while remaining in queue.  Avoid the Bush TNC lot and go where there are little to no cars in the area.  There's plenty of room on Lee Road.  The same goes at Hobby.  Try to move around that area out of the TNC lot.
5)  Some of your cell phone providers have cell phone signal boosters.  You can also purchase a weBoost or a car cell phone booster at various prices from Amazon or Best Buy.  Anything to keep your signal strong.... Right?
6)  Get a bunch of people together with the same concern, and go to one of the Uber Green Light Hubs.  See if you can talk to a manager or someone higher up about your experiences and concerns.  Emailing won't work.  You'll get either a generic response from India or a robo-email thanking you for your concern.
7)  Let the Houston Airport System know.  This is their signal space too and I'm sure signal jamming could be interfering with their operations as well.  Hence this makes what's going on even more illegal as fuck.

This is a small series about the seriousness of the problems arising at the Rideshare TNC lots in Houston.  It's time we take our business back and make sure we all have the same opportunity to make a decent profit without hindrance or terrorism tactics from others.

This is a three part article series.  Stay in tune for tomorrow's blog.  Part Two (TNC Lots from Hell)

Intro to i-Uber Houston - First Posting

Hello Houston and the rest of the world!

My name is Jennifer M. and I am an Uber driver.  I’m also a college grad, mom to three kids, database analyst at a large corporation, doggie foster mom, and a blogger.  I also have driven other platforms, including GetMe, Lyft, etc., but Uber is my main ride-share gig.  Hence, this blog is about the ever changing world of Uber and the people in it.

When Uber first started in Houston, the class of and quality of drivers and cars were much more stellar.  Today, the market has become supersaturated with the May 29, 2017 Governor Abbott signing a bill that has forever changed the rules of Ride-share in the state of Texas.  In addition, with Uber’s recent announcement of allowing vehicles as far back as from 2002 onto the platform, you no longer know what you’re getting in terms of driver and car quality.  With de-regulation, anything goes!

As I write, I will begin to introduce you to a population of Uber drivers that are people like you and me.  As I’ve been a driver for over two years, I’ve gotten to know a rather large number of my fellow ride-share drivers.  This includes the good, the bad, and the “fugly”. More on that topic later......

If you're a new driver, please look into joining the Houston Uber Groups on Facebook.

Questions and comments are always welcomed at htowngeekgirl@gmail.com.
